On Saturday, November 30, the Aiutu Corsu association, which has been fighting HIV in Corsica for decades, is organizing its annual food drive in several partner supermarkets on the island. This meeting, faithful to World AIDS Day celebrated on December 1, has become unmissable. “We have been organizing this annual collection for around 24 years now, each year around December 1, in conjunction with World AIDS Day. It is therefore a unique collection, which allows us to redistribute all year round. essential products for the people we support, particularly people living with HIV and their families,” explains Sylvie Marcaggi, president of the association.
Generosity intact despite difficulties
Despite a sometimes complex economic context, the mobilization of donors remains strong, a surge of solidarity which deeply touches the members of Aiutu Corsu. “Each year, the participation of donors is very strong, and we see great generosity from people, despite the economic difficulties that some encounter. The exact number of donors is difficult to quantify, because we collect in several large stores, and the flow of people is significant, but what we can say is that the enthusiasm and generosity are always there.”
What products to collect?
The objective is to collect non-perishable foods and hygiene products: pasta, rice, canned goods, coffee, soap, and even toothpaste. “It is important that the products are non-perishable, to ensure optimal conservation. Once the products are collected, they are stored in our premises, then redistributed according to the needs of the beneficiaries throughout the year,” specifies Sylvie Marcaggi.
The impact of this collection exceeds expectations, as Audrey Bertolini, in charge of supporting Aiutu Corsu, points out: “Thanks to the generosity of residents, the association was able to redistribute the products collected throughout the previous year, and even share them with students at the University of Corte who needed them. For example, The association distributed 524 food parcels last year, as well as 425 parcels containing specific products.”
Where to donate?
The collection points will be installed in partner supermarkets in Ajaccio: Carrefour Market Mezzavia, Carrefour Rocade, Auchan Mezzavia and Monoprix. The association’s volunteers will welcome donations there throughout the day of November 30.
“This help is really valuable for these people because it allows them to face material and financial difficulties on a daily basis. It is an important action for us, because it is an integral part of our support for patients,” concludes Sylvie Marcaggi.
