A new innovative surgical technique at Nîmes University Hospital for post-delivery perineal complications
The Nîmes University Hospital is one of the only French centers to practice an innovative surgical technique to treat postpartum perineal complications. This process, currently practiced in the Gynecology department, promises to significantly improve the quality of life of the patients concerned.
A revolution for perineal health
« The center of the perineum, located between the vagina and the anus, is particularly stressed during natural childbirth. Thinning of this muscular structure can lead to a vaginal gapresponsible for a syndrome ofvaginal hyperlaxity (discomfort during sex, loss of sensation, vaginal gas, water retention)”, details the communication service of the Nîmes University Hospital. Perineal rehabilitation is often the first treatment option, but it may be insufficient. Traditional surgery (perineoplasty with midline myorrhaphy), although generally effective, can cause “pain during sexual intercourse”.
An innovative technique
Since 2017, Dr Emmanuel Delorme, a French surgeon, has developed a technique “innovative” Who repairs the muscles on either side of the entrance to the vagina, thus avoiding a midline scar. Called mlateral yorrhaphy or flexion of the puborectalis musclesthis procedure can be performed as an outpatient surgery. “A retrospective study carried out on 69 women showed that this technique corrected the vaginal gap in almost all patients. 87% of women who resumed sexual activity noted an improvement, with a risk of complications and pain of less than 3%. indicates the Nîmes University Hospital.
« This new surgical technique represents a major advance which must be made available to all those who need it and underlines the excellence of the medical and healthcare teams at Nîmes University Hospital.“, Frédéric Rimattei, general director of Nîmes University Hospital.
