After giving birth, an American mother forgot that she had just given birth to her triplets. She was in a coma for a week after suffering an amniotic fluid embolism shortly after giving birth, a rare complication, reports USA Today.
The birth took place on August 21. Being pregnant with triplets, the 30-year-old went to a Houston maternity ward to undergo a planned cesarean section. Although the birth itself went well, the young woman’s health deteriorated quickly. For 45 minutes, she dealt with several heart problems before convulsing.
A rare event
According to the mother’s doctor, she was affected by a very rare post-natal complication, amniotic fluid embolism. This is a serious reaction that occurs when amniotic fluid and cells from the fetus enter the mother’s bloodstream. A rare event, but one that is more likely to occur in multiple pregnancies.
“It was the most difficult moment of my life,” explains the father of the three babies. And added: “We went from having the most beautiful experience when we saw our little girls for the first time to ‘Oh my God, my wife… they’re giving her a cardiac massage.’ » Fortunately, the young woman survived. She still had to undergo a hysterectomy, an operation consisting of removing all or part of the uterus.
“I was absolutely terrified”
When she woke up, the mother no longer had any memory of her childbirth and her children: “I was absolutely terrified. […] How could I not remember having my babies? “. However, she was able to count on those close to her to refresh her memory, in particular thanks to photos of her when she was in the hospital.
After this event, the patient wanted to thank the nursing staff, relays KBTX. “I don’t think I would have been alive if I hadn’t been in that hospital,” she says. She has since been able to return home with her three daughters, Charlotte, Collins and Kendall. She and her husband now have to live daily with their three little girls and their big brother, aged 4.
