Cahors. Interview: “prostate cancer is the leading male cancer”

On November 15, the urological surgery team from the Cahors Hospital Center and the Cancer League were present in the hospital hall. They are participating in Operation “Movember”, an awareness month dedicated to men’s health and prostate cancer screening. “With the French Association of Urology we are participating in this standard course for raising awareness of male cancers” explains Doctor Ahmed Mansouri, head of the department who gives us an interview.

Why do we need actions of this type?

Unlike colorectal cancers and breast cancers, there is not yet organized screening for male cancers. These are cancers that we don’t talk about much, they receive little media coverage. With 50,000 new cases per year in , prostate cancer is the leading male cancer and even if it is not a virulent disease overnight, early detection would reduce mortality. The objective of this campaign is to raise awareness of this disease.

How is prostate cancer detected?

“Two examinations are carried out: the PSA measurement and the rectal examination. In case of suspicion of cancer, an MRI is carried out followed by a biopsy. We can now intervene with an ultrasound machine which will recover the images from the MRI and thanks “Artificial Intelligence will identify the location and give us the precise location of the biopsy to be carried out.”

Is the Cahors hospital able to treat this disease?

“Yes, at the Cahors Hospital we are accredited by the Oncopole of . We have a weekly meeting with our colleagues in Toulouse and from start to finish we take charge of the entire care pathway for cancer of the prostate. This allows patients to stay on site, without going to the Oncopole.
