Why you shouldn’t kiss newborns: a British doctor warns

« Don’t kiss a newborn unless you are one of their parents “. This is advice distilled by Dr Karan Rajan on his TikTok account and which should surprise more than one person. However, his arguments are common sense.

Newborns have an immature immune system, still in the development phase. Unlike adults and older children, their bodies are not equipped to effectively fight off pathogens.

Dr. Rajan explains that our face and mouth are home to millions of microscopic bacteria and viruses. “ In a newborn, these microorganisms can cross the blood-brain barrier and cause serious complications “, he explains. “ Even a simple cold, which is mild for an adult, can become dangerous for a baby. »

Thus, certain viral infections – such as herpes – can have very serious consequences in infants.

Of course, the urge to kiss a newborn is natural. But the doctor suggests extended family and friends wait two to three months, until the baby’s immune system is stronger. As for parents, physical contact with their child is essential… provided they are in good health.
