Around 7% of patients treated in health structures in Bunia, Ituri province, suffer from diabetes. These statistics were released on Thursday, November 14, on the occasion of World Diabetes Day. The disease affects all age groups, from children to adults, regardless of gender.
According to Doctor Yves Tibamwenda, an internist at the Bunia general referral hospital, the main factors favoring diabetes include obesity, being overweight, physical inactivity and excessive sugar consumption. “A lot of urine, a lot of appetite, intense thirst and weight loss. This is how diabetes manifests itself. Foods high in sugar should be avoided. Regular consultation is required. At least every month, or every three months, they must see their doctor. We still have patchy hospital prevalences. When we already have a prevalence above 7%, that means that it is a real public health problem,” he explains.
To deal with this disease, diabetes prevention awareness campaigns have been launched since the beginning of November. They encourage the population to adopt a balanced diet, practice regular physical activities and reduce the consumption of sugary foods.
In Bunia, some diabetic care structures are operational, but they operate with limited resources. These establishments are requesting government support to improve patient care.
