Here are the regions of the world most affected by diabetes, according to a study

Nearly 537 million people suffer from diabetes worldwide. As this Thursday, November 14, marks World Diabetes Day, here are the regions of the world most affected by this disease.

Diabetes is among the ten leading causes of death worldwide.

This chronic disease is characterized by excess sugar in the blood and affects 537 million people, according to the latest data from the International Diabetes Federation for the year 2021.

Diabetes is present everywhere on the planet, but other regions are more affected than others.

Africa

According to data from the International Diabetes Federation, Africa (excluding the Maghreb) is the region least affected by diabetes.

Thus, in 2021, 23.6 million people suffered from this disease.

However, in its forecasts, the Federation estimates that the number of patients in this region should reach 54.9 million by 2045, an increase of 132.6%.

Latin America

In sixth position is Latin America. In 2021, 32.5 million diabetics were counted.

The International Diabetes Federation also predicts a sharp increase in the number of cases by 2045, expecting an increase of 50.5% and around 48.9 million diabetics.

North America and the Caribbean

The North America and Caribbean region has the fifth highest number of diabetics in the world: 50.5 million in 2021.

If the increase in the number of patients predicted by the International Diabetes Federation is less than in Africa or Latin America, 62.8 million people are expected to be diabetic in 2045, an increase of 24.4%.

Europe

Europe sits at the foot of this sad podium, since in 2021 61.4 million people suffered from diabetes in this region.

It should nevertheless be noted that the International Diabetes Federation predicts the lowest increase in cases in this region by 2045, “only” 12.7% or 69.2 million sick people.

Middle East and North Africa

Third among the regions most affected by diabetes is the Middle East and North Africa. In this part of the world, 72.7 million people were diabetic in 2021.

In 2045, the International Diabetes Federation predicts an increase in the number of patients of 86.7% to 135.7 million diabetics.

Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is the second region in the world most affected by diabetes. In 2021, 90.2 million people there suffered from this disease.

Here again, the International Diabetes Federation predicts a sharp increase in the number of cases by 2045.

By this date, 151.5 million people will be diabetic in the region, an increase of 68%.

Western Pacific

The Western Pacific is by far the region most affected by diabetes, 205.6 million people there suffered from this disease in 2021, this is almost 9 times more than in Africa, the least affected region.

The trend does not seem to be reversing since, according to the International Diabetes Federation, 260.2 million people will be diabetic in this region in 2045, an increase of 26.5%.
