“What is this thing, a game for children?” » In front of the entrance to theFeugrais hospitalin Saint-Aubin-lès-Elbeuf (Seine-Maritime), a imposing pink inflatable structure challenged visitors on Thursday November 7, 2024.

In reality, it was not a question of play but of prevention for adults and more specifically men. The structure, which represented a giant prostatein the form of a tunnel that visitors could cross to reach the entrance to the hospital, served as a support to better explain how it works and the problems it can cause.

Breaking taboos

And taboo subject that many men do not dare to approach. “Ah, these men, fragile little beings! We dare to talk about our breasts, but with them, we should definitely not broach the subject of the prostate,” confided one woman.

The frequent lack of understanding of the exact role of the prostate is the cause of confusion that can affect sexuality: “It’s most often in the head, for male sexuality. It has nothing to do with it,” commented a nurse.

What is the prostate?

As the nursing staff explained around the inflatable prostate installed in front of the Elbeuvian branch of the Elbeuf – Louviers – Val-de-Reuil intercommunal hospital center, the prostate is a gland the size of a plum in young men, located under the bladder. It surrounds the urethral canal which allows urine to escape.

Prostate cancer is the common first cancer in men and the third leading cause of cancer death. The only current weapon is, as for breast cancer in women, early detection.

The first thing to do is to talk to your GP, who will order the necessary blood test.

Suleiman Wassouf, urologist at CHI

Detected early, prostate cancer, like breast cancer, allows for recovery in approximately 95% of cases.

“It is important to question your general practitioner from the age of 40 to 50,” continues the urologist. If intervention is necessary, the patient can expect to have peace of mind for many years, but a blood test every two or three years will be a precaution. »

Saturday November 9, 2024, an information point will be set up in the gallery of the Clos aux Antes shopping center, in Tourville-la-Rivière, during opening hours. Various caregivers will be present and answer questions. The public will be able to participate in a questionnaire and win prizes.
