some are mandatory depending on the chosen country

Traveling is not without health risks. Depending on the destination and the vulnerability of the traveler, certain vaccines are sometimes strongly recommended or even obligatory depending on the destination, recalls Le Figaro . A simple mosquito bite or animal bite can, in fact, have serious consequences and quickly ruin the vacation. To protect yourself, here are some tips.

Rabies, hepatitis, yellow fever…

The yellow fever vaccine is essential for traveling to parts of Africa and South America. This virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, can have fatal consequences. Being vaccinated is therefore compulsory to travel to several countries in sub-Saharan Africa as well as French Guiana. The WHO recalls that the disease is endemic in 34 countries in Africa and 13 in Latin America. A vaccination certificate is also required when entering certain countries.

Rabies, extremely rare in Europe, is still present in several countries in Asia and Africa. It is therefore recommended to get vaccinated if you plan to visit rural areas where the risk of bite is higher. Malaria is also a threat in many tropical regions. There is no fully effective vaccine, but preventative treatments are available. These must be taken in advance because this disease, transmitted by mosquitoes, can also be fatal.

Where to get vaccinated?

In addition to these specific diseases, other vaccines such as those against hepatitis A and B are often recommended, especially for travel to Africa, Asia or South America. On the other hand, restrictions linked to Covid-19 have been lifted throughout the world, it is therefore no longer necessary to be up to date with your vaccinations to leave , whatever your destination.

To get vaccinated, there is only one key word: anticipate. Indeed, depending on where you live, the vaccines requested and your profile, delays are sometimes very long, particularly in medium-sized towns. To obtain one or more injections, simply go to an international vaccination center or to dedicated organizations. In France, only doctors and nurses are authorized to administer a “travel” vaccine.
