the vaccination campaign for 5th grade students is renewed in the Vosges

The Regional Health Agency (ARS), in collaboration with the Grand Est academic region, is renewing for the 2024/2025 school year the vaccination campaign against human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in schools. 5th grade students in the Vosges, whether they are enrolled in public or private establishments, are affected by this public health initiative aimed at preventing up to 90% of HPV infections, responsible for precancerous lesions and several types of cancer. (cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, penis, larynx).

In the Vosges department, these are 48 colleges et 3852 students who will be affected by this campaign.

A collective effort to protect the health of young people

The campaign aims to promote access to vaccination for all secondary school students in the Vosges, with a view to reducing inequalities in the prevention of cancers linked to papillomaviruses. This vaccination, fully covered by Health Insurance, is free for families and with no out-of-pocket costs.

In the department, vaccinations will be organized by the vaccination center of the Union of Social Security Funds – Center for Preventive Medicine of Epinal as well as by the vaccination center of the Saint Charles Hospital Center in Toul, in partnership with the establishments schools. Mobile teams of health professionals (doctors, nurses, midwives) will visit the colleges concerned twice during the school year. The first dose of vaccine will be administered between October and December 2024with a reminder planned between April and June 2025.

New for 2024/2025: online parental consent

For this new campaign, parents received a digital information kit on HPV vaccination. Their child’s participation is based on a voluntary approach. They were invited to

complete a parental authorization form online via the establishments’ Digital Work Space (ENT) before October 1, 2024.

Encouraging results in the Grand Est

During the previous campaign in 2023/2024, nearly 9,000 5th grade students were vaccinated in the Grand Est region, contributing to a notable improvement in vaccination coverage.

Regionally, as of September 2023, 41% of girls and 29% of boys born in 2011 had received at least one dose of the HPV vaccine, a significant increase from previous years.

In the Vosges, to date, 48.2% of young girls and 10.1% of young boys benefit from a complete vaccination schedule at the age of 16. The objective of this new campaign is to amplify these results and protect even more children against the risks linked to papillomaviruses.

Regional mobilization for better public health

Health teams, in partnership with schools and families, will continue to mobilize throughout the school year to raise awareness among young people and their parents of the importance of HPV vaccination.
