blood diseases detected earlier. Here’s why

There are two hospitalization units for the treatment of leukemia, marrow transplants and the administration of innovative treatments such as cell therapies, gene therapies and new drugs under study. However, thanks to the evolution of treatments, most patients can now receive their medications at home or during the day, without having to sleep in the hospital.

1. How to detect a disease? “Blood abnormalities are most often detected by the general practitioner via a blood test, but sometimes also by a specialist or by emergency services. When the patient arrives for the consultation, we carry out various additional tests: in particular more in-depth blood tests but also in certain cases imaging, scanners, ultrasounds or a marrow puncture.

2. Research has enabled significant developments in these diseases: “We detect diseases earlier and better, which allows treatments to be better adapted, particularly by targeting certain genetic anomalies in diseased cells. Thanks to this progress, a large proportion of patients will be cured or stable under treatment with a good quality of life. This is why we developed the long-term follow-up clinic, also called the Survivorship clinic (see in the latest issue of Patient). »

3. What treatments? Each treatment will be discussed with the patient, the trusted people who accompany him and if possible with his treating doctors. Adapting a treatment to the person requires not only knowing the diseases and new treatments but also making this treatment possible in real life.
