Pollution, diet, genetics: why are allergies exploding?

One in three French people are allergic. Pollens, processed food, pollution: many factors promote these reactions. Doctor Jean-François , allergist, explains the causes of this increase and gives advice for living better with allergies.

Allergies affect one in three French people, or around 18 million people. Doctor Jean-François Fontaine, allergist, explains the increase in cases, the genetic and environmental causes, and the impact of pollution. He also discusses new food allergies and increased risks of allergies after floods.

Allergies on the rise: a public health problem

The number of people with allergies has increased over the past 30 years. Several factors contribute to this, including genetics, pollution, and dietary changes. Pollen, air pollution and ultra-processed food are the main triggers. Exposure to new food allergens, such as exotic fruits or sesame, is also on the rise.

Jean-François Fontaine points out that certain respiratory allergies, such as those to birch pollen, can predispose to food allergies. For example, a person allergic to birch may develop a sensitivity to certain fruits and vegetables. He also mentions unexpected allergies like those related to cannabis.

Allergies and indoor environment: precautions to take

Stormy spells and floods encourage the development of mold, which is also responsible for allergies. It is therefore essential to dry homes thoroughly after these events. The allergist recommends paying particular attention to indoor air, often polluted by chemicals used for cleaning or essential oils, which can release irritating compounds.

Finally, air quality in homes and at work plays an essential role in preventing allergies. Regular ventilation, avoiding chemicals and managing mold are key actions to avoid allergic attacks.
