Mpox in Africa: 866 people have died since the start of 2024 – LINFO.re

According to the latest report from the Africa CDC health agency, 866 deaths linked to mpox have been recorded in Africa since the start of the year, as of Thursday October 3.

“The epidemic is not under control”

The Africa CDC health agency announced this Thursday, October 3, that 866 people died from mpox in Africa since the start of the year. The tally also reveals that about 34,297 cases have been reported across the five regions of the continent, including 38 in Ghana, a country where the disease had not been detected until now. THE mpox has now been identified in 16 African countries. Dr Jean Kaseya, Director General of the Africa CDC, stressed that “the epidemic is not under control”report French media as Le Figaro. He also expressed concerns about the low rate of case detection.

Clade 1b, vaccination…

The mpoxor monkeypoxis a viral disease that spreads from animals to humans and between people. It causes symptoms such as fever, muscle pain and rash. The increase in cases on the continent and the emergence of a new variant, clade 1b, led the WHO to raise its global alert level in August. This variant has been detected in the DRC, Burundi, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. The vaccination campaign in the DRC, initially planned, has been postponed, but should begin in two days, according to Jean Kaseya. Rwanda launched its vaccination on September 17.
