Pink October: breast cancer screening by mammography declines in Ain and both Savoies

DThroughout the month, the national operation to raise awareness of breast cancer screening, called Pink October, is taking place. In our departments, numerous prevention and charitable actions are organized to raise funds and advance research into breast cancer, but also to inform the public about the actions to adopt. Among these actions to adopt, the self-palpation method, which can be carried out at home, but also screening for the disease by mammography. This type of screening is declining in our departments.

Up to 6% drop in one year

At the national level, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is in sixth position in the ranking of regions with the participation rate of women in organized breast cancer screening, with a rate of 51.3% for the period 2022/2023. The national rate (measured by INSEE) stands at 46.5%, over the same period. Both variables experienced a slight decrease, of around 2%, compared to the previous measurement period (2021/2022).

At the level of our three departments, the screening rate organized by mammography also fell between 2022 and 2023. The largest drop concerns Savoie: this screening rate fell by 6.1% in one year, from 57.7 % to 51.6%. In Haute-Savoie, the mammography screening rate increased from 55.6 to 50.6%, or 5% less in one year. On the Ain side, the drop is more contained, of only 1.9% (from 51.6 to 49.7%).

These figures were communicated by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes cancer screening coordination center. Which reminds us that this type of mammography screening remains the most effective in preventing the spread of the disease and detecting it as early as possible.

As a reminder, as part of the national breast cancer screening program, women aged between 50 and 74 have the possibility of having a mammogram 100% covered by Health Insurance every two years.
