what are the different types of breast cancer?

Pink October is a global campaign, created in 1985, to raise awareness of breast cancer screening and fundraising. Here are the different types, which mainly affect women.

On the occasion of the breast cancer awareness campaign which takes place throughout the month of October, the Pink October mobilization is collecting donations to help its parent company: the Foundation for Cancer Research.

More than 61,000 women suffer from breast cancer, of whom more than 12,000 die from this disease each year in . Breast cancer can take several forms. Here are all the known types of carcinomas:

Adenocarcinoma in situ

These tumors originate in glandular cells, that is to say in the mammary gland. They can form in the milk ducts or in the mammary lobules (glands that produce milk). This type of cancer sees tumors form in these areas without them spreading to other parts of the breast.

Infiltrating adenocarcinoma

For this type of infiltrating cancer, the cancer cells take shape, in the vast majority of cases, in the milk ducts. Infiltrative lobular cancers are rarer.

For this type of cancer, cancer cells spread to the lymph nodes but also to other parts of the body, such as the armpits for example.

Other rare forms of breast cancer

Medullary carcinoma: this type of cancer represents 1% of infiltrative breast cancers. Very often, doctors suspect a genetic form. The majority of patients with this cancer are under 50 years old. Its prognosis is often much more favorable than infiltrating ductal carcinoma.

Mucinous carcinoma: it accounts for 2% of infiltrative breast cancers. Often it develops in women aged 60-70 years. It also has, overall, a more favorable prognosis than other infiltrative breast cancers. Furthermore, this carcinoma differs from others since the cancer cells produce mucus.

Tubulous carcinoma: still uncommon, it represents between 1 and 2% of infiltrative breast cancers. Small in size, these cancer cells spread very little in the lymph nodes of the armpits. In the majority of cases, women over 55 with cancer are affected by this type of carcinoma.

Papillary carcinoma: it accounts for no more than 1 to 2% of breast cancers. Infiltrating or in situ, this type of carcinoma occurs in older women. It is characterized by slow growth and a better prognosis than other invasive breast cancers.
