Breast cancer: these little-known symptoms

Visible but often ignored symptoms

The first image that comes to mind when we talk about breast cancer is a boule or
masse palpable in the breast. However, although it is a common sign, it is not the only indicator. Less obvious symptoms can also signal the presence of breast cancer and deserve equal attention.

For example, a nipple retractiona modification of the skin texture breast (orange peel) or even a nipple discharge
may indicate a problem. Many women are not aware that these changes should also lead them to see a doctor. A study conducted by the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) showed that less than half of the women surveyed were aware of these common signs.

Uncommon but telltale symptoms

Besides the more visible symptoms, there are also signs that often go unnoticed because they are not directly related to the chest. The National Cancer Institute (INCa) mentions that pain in the armpit or the presence of
hard masses under this region can also be a sign of breast cancer.

Other late signs, such as nauseaa
loss of appetite or persistent pain in certain parts of the body can also be associated with already advanced breast cancer. These symptoms are often confused with other health problems, but it is important to monitor them and consult a healthcare professional if these problems persist.

The importance of awareness and early detection

The Pink October campaign emphasizes not only the need to be aware of these little-known symptoms, but also the importance of
early detection. Tools like mammography can detect breast cancers at an early stage, sometimes even before visible symptoms appear. According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 30 % of new cases of cancer among women in the United States each year involve breast cancer, with nearly 300,000 new cases diagnosed in 2023.
