A new “highly contagious and deadly” virus rages in Africa, two Belgian students repatriated

Dhe students from KU Leuven (KUL) who were doing an internship at a hospital in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, were repatriated to Belgium due to the Marburg virus, the university said on Thursday. The highly contagious and deadly virus is currently spreading in the Rwandan metropolis.

KU Leuven assures that it is monitoring the situation closely, in consultation with the FPS Public Health. Both students completed an internship in a hospital, which poses an additional risk. “They left last night and returned home this morning,” the university said. “The goal is for them to continue their internship here as soon as possible. »

Three other students from the establishment are still on site with another doctoral student accompanying them. “They are still there. They are not active in the health field, but do research in rural regions,” explains the KUL. “We are staying in touch and monitoring the situation closely. If necessary, we will ask them to return to Belgium. »

Six students from Ghent University (UGent) will also return home this weekend, newspaper De Morgen reported on Wednesday. These are five students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences as well as one student from the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences.
