TESTIMONY. “I was heavily treated for cancer for two years even though I was not sick”

Terrible diagnostic error. Megan Royle went through an emotional roller coaster for two years due to an incorrect diagnosis. It all started in 2019, when she noticed an anomaly on a mole on her arm. Following a consultation with her GP, Megan ended up in hospital for further tests. That’s when the diagnosis came.
Chelsea & Westminster Hospital diagnosed the young woman with skin cancer. Wishing to become a mother in the future, Megan Royle chose to freeze her eggs for fear that the treatment would alter her fertility. She then began a course of immunotherapy to fight the skin cancer she thought she had. Additionally, she underwent surgery on her arm to remove the supposedly cancerous mole.

It was only two years later, when she had to change hospitals following a move, that she discovered she had suffered all this for nothing. After her file was transferred, Megan Royle was summoned by her new doctor. He revealed to her thatshe did not have skin cancer, and never had.You would think the immediate reaction would be to be relieved, and in a sense I was. But what I felt at that moment was mostly frustration and anger.” explains the young woman.

The victim received damages

“Living with the worry of the disease and the treatment and then finding out that I didn’t have cancer was really hard. I felt bad for a very long time after that, although that may seem strange.” says Megan Royle. Knowing that she could have been spared an operation, the difficulties of immunotherapy and the psychological cost knowing you have cancer is complicated to manage. After discovering the diagnostic error, the young woman called on a lawyer and received damages from the hospital at fault.
