Mpox epidemic: 170 cases recorded in since the start of the year, including 10 in the PACA region

Last August, the health system was placed in “maximum vigilance” in the face of the mpox epidemic. In an update carried out at the very beginning of the week, Public Health gave the figures for this epidemic on French territory.

The public health agency has recorded a total of 170 cases of mpox since January 1, 2024 including 3 cases over the last 7 days. These reported cases concern adults, namely 164 men and 6 women.

Ten cases recorded in PACA

Still according to Santé Publique Frnce, all cases concerned adults aged between 18 and 65 years old. Six cases concerned women, “of which 2 declared having been in contact in the 3 weeks preceding the start of the signs with a confirmed case (a sexual partner for one and a person in the family circle for the other) and one with a case not biologically confirmed (sexual partner).”

Geographically, cases are mainly concentrated in Ile-de-France with 71 cases then in Auvergne-RhôneAlpes with 33 cases. Ten cases were also recorded in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and 10 in New Aquitaine.

Out of 163 cases studied, 10 of them were hospitalized for severe pain, “associated or not with a concomitant pathology or complications”, specify the health authorities.

However, these are intended to be reassuring: “The number of cases of mpox currently declared in France is incommensurate with that observed during the 2022 epidemic.”

The total number of cases reported as of October 1, 2024 is 5,198, of which 83% were biologically confirmed.
