how to reverse the trend in women

Pancreatic and lung cancers, which tend to stagnate or decrease in men, are on the rise among women. The reason is quite simple: women have unfortunately adopted certain risky behaviors that were traditionally masculine. What are the main factors behind this increase?

The major factor is the increase in smoking among women. Tobacco, the consumption of which began in the 70s and 80s among them, is today the main cause of these cancers. Another important factor is the increase in obesitybecause the latter is a recognized risk factor for pancreatic cancer. However, obesity is growing rapidly. If we associate the increase in smoking with that of obesity, this largely explains the increase in cancers among women.

Good news: it is possible to reverse the trend

The good news is that it is possible to reverse the trend. It starts with a collective will to create a “tobacco-free generation”. However, it must be recognized that tobacco lobbies remain powerful in and that public health policies sometimes lack courage. However, stop smoking, practice regular physical activityadopt a balanced diet with more fruits and vegetables, less salt, ultra-processed foods and alcohol, would allowprevent up to 40% of cancers.

It is also recommended to participate in organized screening programs : mammogram for breast cancer, smear for cervical cancer and stool blood test for colorectal cancer.

In France, several positive experiences demonstrate the benefit of screening for lung cancer in women who smoke, even without symptoms. For example, if you are a 60-year-old woman and smoker, you will be offered a CT scan to screen for possible lung cancer. In the United States, by combining effective measures against smoking and CT screening, authorities have managed to significantly reduce cases of lung cancer. This shows that there is reason for hope.
