Three students from Grenoble-Alpes University were hospitalized between September 16 and 20 after contracting meningitis, indicated the Regional Health Agency (ARS) this Monday, September 30. “Their state of health is now reassuring”adds this same source, specifying that preventive antibiotic treatment was administered to people who had been in close contact with the patients.

The transmission of meningitis occurs “through direct, close and prolonged contact with a sick person or a healthy carrier”writes the ARS. Invasive meningococcal infections are linked to bacteria and mainly affect young children or young adults.

No new cases of meningitis have been reported at the University of Grenoble since September 20. Faced with this health situation, a vaccination campaign will be organized by mid-October by the ARS and the Grenoble student health service.

Vaccination against meningococcus B is “the most effective measure to prevent the occurrence of new cases and complications”informs the ARS. The objective of this campaign is to prevent the appearance of new cases in the long term. Vaccination is recommended, including for people who have not been in contact with the sick.

Meningitis most often manifests itself with symptoms such as fever and severe headache, often accompanied by vomiting. The rapid appearance of one or more red or purplish spots should also alert you.

“The sick person may also have disturbances in consciousness, pale or even gray facial color, diarrhea in addition to fever and vomiting, intolerance to light or noise, stiff neck, body aches. severe fatigue, severe drowsiness, eye paralysis or even convulsions.also lists the ARS, urging people with these symptoms to dial 15.

Invasive meningococcal infections are, in France, notifiable diseases. Healthcare professionals must inform the health authorities, responsible for implementing the necessary management measures.
