On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the HPC association in partnership with the Municipal Archives of Carmaux offers you an exhibition of old postcards entitled “Autrefois, au coin de la rue…”.
In line with the national theme of the 2024 edition “The heritage of roads, networks and connections”, more than forty photographs from the beginning of the 20th century will be exhibited this weekend in the windows of certain stores. An opportunity to delve into the past of the former mining town and discover the homes and commercial premises that once shaped the main avenues and squares.
Who remembers Place Victor Hugo without the Jean Jaurès monument, the crossroads of Place Gambetta before the development of the Coin Dulac façade or the cooperative bakery on Rue Arago?
“This is not the first time that we have organised an exhibition visible from a public space. This allows us to raise awareness among a wider audience about the history of our region. We have chosen to place the photographs according to where they were taken. This way, you just have to turn your head to compare them with the current appearance of the street. We have received a very favourable reception, the shopkeepers we contacted have all agreed to display an enlargement in their windows”, indicate Martine, Maggy and Clément who worked on this exhibition.
The exhibition is visible until Sunday September 22 around the square and in the avenue Jean Jaurès, the avenue Albert Thomas, the place Gambetta, the rue Arago, the avenue de Rodez etc.
It’s up to you to keep your eyes open!
