A reduction in gray matter of about 4% in more than 80% of brain regions. These are the astonishing brain changes linked to pregnancy that have been observed by an American research team in a healthy 38-year-old woman who was pregnant for the first time. The study, published in Nature Neurosciencealso shows better connectivity between different parts of this woman’s brain.

To demonstrate these changes, researchers Elizabeth Chrastil, Laura Pritschet and Emily Jacobs conducted 26 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and blood tests at key time points: the three weeks before conception, during pregnancy and the two years after giving birth. These scans were then compared to the brains of eight controls, eight non-pregnant individuals, men and women.
