Influenza cases soar, seniors urged to get vaccinated

Influenza cases are skyrocketing in Montreal, the Laurentians, and Lanaudière. The peak of contagiousness will be reached in February, according to the national director of public health. The Dr Luc Boileau calls on seniors to be vaccinated in order to reduce pressure on Montreal emergencies and the “450”.

“It’s a disease that remains serious,” says Dr.r Boileau. There are often between 6,000 and 7,000 hospitalizations per year. Around 300 or 400 people who even go to intensive care. Unfortunately, we also have deaths. »

About 58% of those aged 75 and over living at home have received the flu vaccine so far. Quebec’s target is 70%. “We have achieved the objective for CHSLDs and private residences for seniors,” specifies the Dr Boileau.
