How to solve problems while sleeping

As the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer wrote: “Dreams are a passing madness and madness a long dream.” Coming out of this mirage, many feel the impression of being stuck between two worlds. Dreams can also be a frequent source of creativity. Paul McCartney said he heard the melody of Yesterday while sleeping. This parallel world could even help solve problems. At least that’s what Daniel Z. Lieberman, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at George Washington University in the United States, explains in his book Dopamine published by First editions.

The National Institute of Sleep and Vigilance defines dreaming as production mentale more or less complex, sometimes very poor, sometimes very rich, often characterized by images very detailed associated with one or more scenarios, including scenes, characters, dialogues and emotions. They are formed during paradoxical sleep. “When waking someone up, we are more likely to get a complete story if the sleeper is in REM sleep,” explains the institute.

“If it’s a relationship problem, imagine the person concerned. If you’re looking for inspiration, imagine a blank sheet of paper. If you’re stuck on a project, imagine an object that represents it”

In his book, American professor Daniel Z. Lieberman gives advice on solving problems while sleeping. He talks about dream incubation. “Choose a problem that is important to you and that you really want to solve,” he emphasizes. When a desire is strong, it is more likely to appear in this phase of REM sleep. The idea is to think about the problem before sleeping, and if possible, visualize it in image form. “If it’s a relationship problem, imagine the person involved. If you’re looking for inspiration, imagine a white sheet. If you are stuck on a project, imagine an object that represents it,” explains the professor. You must then keep the image in mind so that it is the last thing you see when you fall asleep.

Write your dream on paper to find the solution

As soon as you wake up, the scientist suggests writing this thought down on paper, whether it seems related to the problem or not. “It is important to write it down before getting up or thinking about something else. It often happens that the dream disappears as soon as you wake upwhile it was overflowing with meanings. It may take you several nights before you dream of a solution, and it may not necessarily be the best one. but it will bring a new point of view which will allow you to approach the problem from another angle.” To your pillows!
