The recently affected person would have frequented the interior corridors of Carrefour Laval during their period of contagiousness as well as the Renaud-Bray of the same establishment on January 7. “Thus, thousands of people may have been exposed to measles,” indicates the MSSS.
Several other exhibition locations have been identified in the regions of Montreal, Laurentides, Laval and Montérégie. These places can be consulted on the MSSS website.
People not protected against measles who have been in contact with a possible case should self-isolate and monitor for symptoms. They must contact the Info-Santé 811 service as soon as possible.
It is very unlikely to get measles after being vaccinated. The main symptoms of the disease are fever, nasal congestion with discharge, cough, conjunctivitis and sensitivity to light.
As measles is very contagious, it is possible to become infected without having been in direct contact with an infected person. It is enough to have been in the same room as a case for a short period of time.
The disease can cause serious complications particularly in pregnant women, children under one year of age, and those with weakened immune systems.
In Quebec, children receive the measles vaccine between the ages of 12 and 18 months. It is offered free of charge to all people born after 1970 who have never had the disease, or who have never received the vaccine for it.
