Australian health authorities are warning of the worrying spread of a bacterial disease in the southeast of the country. This is Buruli ulcer, a bacteria that attacks the skin. Ben Cowie, Director of Health for the State of Victoria, issued a statement on Thursday December 19, 2024 to warn residents of metropolitan Melbourne, reports BFMTV .
“The disease is spreading across Victoria and is no longer just confined to areas along the coast”said the expert, focusing on the suburb of Ascot Vale, located to the north of the city. A total of 344 positive cases have been recorded in Victoria, according to figures as of December 17, 81 more than last year.
Avoiding mosquitoes and opossums
If the disease “is not transmissible from man to man”according to Ben Cowie, “There is, however, evidence that mosquitoes and possums play a role in disease transmission in Victoria.” This is why the specialist recommends that residents avoid all contact with opossums, and in particular with their excrement, which may contain the bacteria. Concerning mosquitoes, they are invited to equip themselves with repellents and wear loose clothing to protect themselves against bites.
Mycobacterium ulcerans from its scientific name, the bacteria was first diagnosed in Australia in the 1930s. It is a microorganism belonging to the family of bacteria responsible in particular for tuberculosis and leprosy.
Buruli ulcer often starts as a painless lump or plaque on the arms, legs or face. In the absence of antibiotic treatment, this area ulcerates and forms a lesion which can affect the bone, causing major deformations. Symptoms can occur up to four to five months after infection.
