Published on December 11, these new independent studies from the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, concluded that patients with diabetes type 2 treated with the drug Ozempic have an increased risk of developing damage to the optic nerve of the eye. “Both studies are based on Danish registers and are the largest in the world,” writes the Danish University.
A risk of serious and permanent loss of vision
To carry out their research, the Danish researchers were able to examine “data from 424,152 Danish with type 2 diabetes,” specifies the university. According to scientists, taking sémaglutide, the substance present in Ozempicwould be more dangerous than another equivalent medication and would double the risk to develop a “ non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy ».
This is “damage to the optic nerve of the eye caused by sudden cessation of blood flow to the optic nerve » which can “lead to serious and permanent vision loss”, explains Jakob Grauslund, professor specializing in eye diseases at the research center at the University of Southern Denmark.
