Energy drinks, sniffables, alcohol, and other stimulants may seem harmless, but they profoundly harm the quality of rest. These substances stimulate the nervous system, delay falling asleep and disrupt deep sleep, essential for recovery. A Norwegian study published in the journal BMJ Open reveals that consumption of energy drinks is associated with poor sleep quality and even insomnia among students. The survey covered the health and well-being of more than 53,000 adults aged 18 to 35. Participants answered questions about their energy drink consumption, sleep habits, difficulty falling asleep, and sleep duration. And the results show that students who consume energy drinks sleep an average of 30 minutes less per night compared to those who do not or occasionally consume them. Researchers also found an increase in nighttime awakenings and difficulty falling asleep among regular users.
