Tunisia – Hair straightening products: the Ministry of Health calls for responsible use

In a press release made public, the Ministry of Health recalls the importance of responsible use of hair straightening products containing glyoxylic acid. Although these products are authorized on the market, their inappropriate use can cause serious adverse health effects.

Among the risks identified are scalp irritations or burns, allergic reactions, temporary respiratory discomfort in poorly ventilated spaces, as well as kidney risks in the event of repeated exposure over a long period.

The Ministry invites users to respect the instructions mentioned on the packaging and to take special precautions. Application of these products should be avoided in children, adolescents, pregnant women, or if scalp lesions are present. It is recommended to limit the frequency of use and space out applications. Good ventilation is essential during their use to avoid inhalation of vapors. Furthermore, it is advisable to carry out a skin test beforehand to detect a possible allergy.

If symptoms such as redness, burning or difficulty breathing occur, use should be discontinued immediately and medical advice sought.

The Ministry also recalls some general recommendations for the use of cosmetic products. These must only be purchased in regulated circuits and their integrity must be checked before use. Products in opened or altered packaging should be avoided. Strict hygiene, including washing hands and tools, is essential. Sharing products should be avoided in order to prevent cross infections.

Any adverse effect linked to the use of straightening products or any other cosmetic product can be reported to the National Pharmacovigilance Center by email at [email protected] or by telephone at +216 71 260 691. National Risk Assessment Agency can also be reached at [email protected] or at +216 71 903 942.

The Ministry of Health recalls that the health and safety of citizens remains an absolute priority. Careful and moderate use of cosmetic products is essential to preserve everyone’s well-being.
