A 74-year-old American decorates an entire street every year, in the run-up to Christmas, for his wife, who has been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for four years. He does this to help her create new memories.
Since his wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease four years ago, he has wanted to decorate an entire street for Christmas. “Without my wife, I don’t know if I would have done it”said the 74-year-old man CBS News. “But she wanted Christmas, so I gave it to her. I would do anything to make her happy”he added. With what has become a tradition, the Marine veteran hopes his wife, to whom he has been married for 53 years, can create new memories.
Neighbors supporting the couple
Thanks to his efforts, the man was able to count on the help of volunteers to transform a street in the town of Indianola, in the state of Iowa, in the United States, into a real Christmas scene. “I think the whole neighborhood feels very lucky to have him.”explained a neighbor. His wife was delighted with the Christmas decorations which stretched over several dozen meters. “I didn’t know what to think. But I’m glad he did. I love him”she explained. The septuagenarian does not intend to stop there and sees things big for the coming years. “I will do it in his memory for as long as I can.”he confided.
To thank the man for all his efforts and to celebrate the woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, the neighbors set up a special mailbox for the couple. They will give him all the letters so that he can read them to his wife.
