Report: “4 million diabetics… and you? »

On the occasion of World Diabetes Day which takes place on November 14, France 5 dedicates a Health Survey to diabetes, broadcast on Tuesday November 19 at 9:05 p.m. The 52-minute report explores experiences of living with diabetes. Between diagnosis, treatment, pharmacovigilance, diversion of drugs and medical devices, sedentary lifestyle, explosion of type 2 diabetes in overseas territories, type 2 diabetes and patients find themselves at the heart of the news. However, we regret the lack of visibility given to type 1 diabetes.

Claude Chaumeil and Nathalie Paccot: patients at the heart of the commitment

Claude and Nathalie were invited to share their life journey and their commitment within the French Federation of Diabetics. Nathalie, a 65-year-old former nurse, has type 2 diabetes and we detect boundless vitality in her. When Nathalie is not present at the Oise Diabetics Association, a member of the Federation, she is on the markets doing prevention. And when she is not on the markets, she is on the sets of France , with amazing confidence! Her journey demonstrates an inspiring resilience. Nathalie opens up about her past and her lifestyle habits which, she admits, were not exemplary. But when she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, she found unexpected strength: “I lost 20 kilos in 17 years of diabetes, slowly but surely, that was the idea. » Claude, for his part, speaks out on the issues of people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and acts as a spokesperson for patients. Inspiring examples that prove to us that everything is possible despite illness!

A debate focused on type 2 diabetes: between prevention, treatments and preconceived ideas

While type 2 diabetes is the leading cause of amputation and blindness, it is often the subject of farcical debate and falsehoods. “miracle cures”to the great despair of those first concerned. Fortunately, a team of patients and health professionals is there to set the record straight. Various questions punctuate the debate. Can we talk about remission of type 2 diabetes? Does intermittent fasting help with type 2 diabetes? How do we know if we are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes? The endocrino-diabetologist doctor Emmanuelle Lecornet-Sokol, as well as the dietician Luce Jean-Baptiste, disentangle the truth from the false, as well as the good and bad practices when we have type 2 diabetes. Myriam Hamidouche, patient with type 2 diabetes, tells us about the “remission” of his diabetes*, the beneficial impacts of an adapted diet and physical activity, and in particular the initiative of the city of regarding the development of a Sports-Health Center (MMS). Hakaroa Vallée, suffering from type 1 diabetes, fights against the professional discrimination suffered by people affected by it. He explains his fight to us.
Finally, Marina Carrère d’Encausse invited viewers to take the FINDRISC test live, to assess their risks of developing type 2 diabetes. If you would like to take this test or share it with your loved ones: click here.

* Questioned as part of the program, the experts rather confirm the term “remission” or reversibility of type 2 diabetes, and that it is only possible and sustainable over time under certain conditions. “We can have remissions of diabetes [de type 2] but: “we always remain under surveillance, because if we regain weight or if we change our eating habits a little, blood sugar levels can rise again and become abnormal”declares Professor Lyse Bordier. Finally, Dr Emmanuelle Lecornet-Sokol states: “We know that after 10 years of diabetes [de type 2]and when you are already on insulin, the possibility of total remission is still very low. ». She also specifies that age is a criterion to take into consideration.
