Ear mites are caused by a small parasite (mite) that develops in the ear canal. The diagnosis is quite easy to make because the animal scratches its ears and has typical brownish and smelly earwax.
How to fight against the proliferation of the parasite?
It is complicated to get rid of them because acaricide products are effective on mites, but not on their eggs. Knowing that it takes 3 weeks for the eggs to become larvae and that not all the eggs were laid at the same time, the treatment is necessarily long! On the program: cleaning the ear with a hygiene product, acaricide and/or anti-inflammatory product in the ear, pipette at the base of the neck or antiparasitic medication, all for several weeks.
General inspection of all animals
As ear mites are very contagious, all animals in the household should be examined and, if necessary, treated. It is, however, not contagious to humans.
