This Friday, November 29, 2024, Public Health France, revealed the epidemiological update for the week of November 18 to 24. Chikungunya: Six new cases of chikungunya have been reported, bringing the total to 26 cases detected on the island since August 23, 2024. Two outbreaks are currently active: one in the West (Hermitage) and one in the South (Étang Salt the tops). In addition, 3 isolated cases were also detected, one in the West and 2 in the South (Photo: www.imazpress.com)
After an absence of indigenous circulation since 2010, an indigenous case was reported in the west (Boucan-Canot) at the end of August.
Since then, three outbreaks of viral circulation have been reported. One of them is now extinct. The two other outbreaks – Hermitage and Etang-Salé – are still active in a context where weather conditions are favorable for the vector.
Since August 23 and November 21, a total of 24 confirmed cases of indigenous chikungunya have been reported in Reunion. All cases, PCR+, were confirmed by the associated CNR of Arboviroses-CHU La Réunion.

– Two active chikungunya outbreaks –
During week 47, 4 new cases of chikungunya were reported: 3 cases in the Etang Salé outbreak and 1 in the Ermitage outbreak. Furthermore, 2 cases have also already been reported in S48 at Etang Salé, investigations relating to these cases are still in progress.
The ARS vector control services have deployed their management measures.
Furthermore, dengue fever continues to circulate quietly in the territory. Since the end of August, 22 cases have been reported, the majority in the south (Saint-Joseph, Saint-Louis, Saint-Pierre) but also 5 cases in Saint-Paul, including a very recent case in the heart of the chikungunya outbreak in the Hermitage. At the start of summer, weather conditions are therefore conducive to the spread of arboviruses.
– “Stop mosquitoes”: Reunion takes action against dengue and chikungunya –
In this context of autochthonous circulation of chikungunya and dengue, medical personnel are invited to prescribe as quickly as possible after the onset of symptoms a biological analysis allowing the confirmation or denial of the diagnosis in any patient who presents with a flu-like syndrome with joint pain.
Only PCR (to be carried out until D7) allows rapid confirmation diagnosis.
Protecting yourself with repellent and a mosquito net, eliminating mosquito nests and consulting your doctor if you experience symptoms are the key messages of this campaign.
Since the beginning of the year, dengue has been circulating quietly on the island, and after more than 15 years of absence, chikungunya has made its return to Reunion, with 2 active clusters of cases (outbreaks) and one progression of the dispersion of cases. Faced with these threats, each of us has a role to play in protecting our health and that of our loved ones.
– Simple actions, collective effectiveness against dengue and chikungunya –
To fight against mosquitoes, the ARS reminds you of the simple but essential good actions:
• Eliminate stagnant water (mosquito nests) every week: empty cups, flower pots, plants that retain water, etc.; check the gutters; store tires and any object that could accumulate water; cover water tanks with mosquito nets or fabrics.
• Protect yourself from mosquito bites with repellents and mosquito nets, particularly for children, bedridden people and people sick with dengue or chikungunya.
• Consult your doctor at the first symptoms (fever, headache, muscle/joint pain, nausea, etc.). A laboratory analysis prescribed by the doctor will confirm the diagnosis.
Certain forms of dengue or chikungunya can be very serious, leading to hospitalizations or even deaths. For people who have contracted dengue or chikungunya, it is essential to continue to:
• protect yourself to avoid contaminating those around you;
• monitor your state of health and consult your doctor in the event of deterioration.
