A 63-year-old man expelled his intestines from his body after sneezing violently during breakfast in Florida.

A gruesome sight straight out of a horror movie. In Florida, a 63-year-old American man saw part of his intestines being expelled from his body after sneezing violently, reports the American Journal of Medical Case Reports.

Reported in the May 2024 issue of the medical journal, the incident took place after the man, who had recently undergone surgery for a recurrence of cancer, went to the restaurant to celebrate his ongoing recovery.

“During breakfast, the man sneezed violently and then coughed. He immediately felt a feeling of wetness and pain in his lower abdomen. When he looked down, he observed several pink intestinal loops protruding from the area of his recent surgery,” the researchers described, specifying that on the morning of the incident, doctors had removed the staples put in place after the cystectomy, which aimed to remove his bladder.

An “unusual case of evisceration”

Faced with this unexpected and impressive accident, the 63-year-old man finally contacted the emergency services to be transferred to the hospital, where the paramedics noted “large quantities of intestine” coming out of his stomach.

Ultimately, more fear than harm for the victim of this “unusual case of intestinal evisceration”, since he was taken care of, with the eviscerated intestine returning to the abdominal cavity.

“Although wound dehiscence is a well-known complication, this case is important because evisceration through the abdominal surgical site after cystectomy is poorly described in the medical literature,” the researchers concluded in their scientific article.
