Hannah Glass, 19, ate a gluten-free brownie without knowing it had roasted peanut flour in it, a food she is severely allergic to.
A first-year student at Maranatha University in Watertown, Wisconsin, Hannah Glass ate a gluten-free brownie on November 5 prepared by a group of parents for students with gluten allergies. However, she was allergic to roasted peanut flour, used as a substitute for wheat, according to information from the New York Post.
“She felt something was wrong.”
The brownie directly triggered hives and vomiting. “From the second bite, she felt something was wrong” explains his father.
She immediately calls her parents to alert them of an unusually stronger reaction than usual. Hannah lay on the floor to take an antihistamine but the situation worsened with difficulty breathing, a collapsed lung and eventually loss of consciousness.
“She was completely unresponsive and I was incredibly helpless,” declared her family, who explained that the young woman had had a seizure and that her heart had stopped for a few minutes in the ambulance. Doctors placed her on a ventilator and said she suffered from severe brain swelling.
A tribute walk in the hospital
“The brain swelling was so severe that all hope was lost”declares his family. Hannah’s parents finally had to make the difficult decision to unplug their daughter on November 10. “No parent should ever have to feel this way. If we can spare someone else this deep pain, at our expense, we should.”declares his father.
In a video posted on an account Facebook dedicated to their daughter, her parents organized with family, friends and hospital staff a sort of white march with the body of the young girl on a hospital bed. The parents decided to donate some of the young woman’s organs, which helped save four lives.
