For men over 50, andropause remains a little-discussed subject yet fraught with challenges. On the occasion of Movember annual men’s health awareness initiative, Let’s say tomorrowthe dating application dedicated to singles over 50, reveals the results of a unique study¹ on the perception and effects of andropause in men.

Multiple symptoms and insufficient awareness: 37% of men do not know what andropause is

44% of respondents say that health professionals do not provide enough information on this subject and 48% agree that the media do not talk about it openly. Just like menopause (83% of women), andropause is considered a taboo subject for 85% of men.

This lack of information creates real apprehension among men: among those who are already dealing with symptoms, 58% say they do not feel prepared to deal with them. This apprehension is even more marked among those who have not yet felt the first signs, with 68% feeling insufficiently prepared.

The top symptoms identified by respondents include low libido (51%) and erectile dysfunction (40%), followed by hot flashes (32%) and low energy (28%).

A real impact on sentimental and sexual life

The effects of andropause are not limited to physical well-being: 54% of men say that their romantic relationships have been affected, and 53% notice an alteration in their sex life. Despite these impacts, communication with the partner remains limited, with only 21% of respondents saying they are “totally comfortable” discussing their symptoms with their partner.

These results highlight not only the importance of increased awareness around andropause, but also the benefit of an open dialogue between partners, in order to help men over 50 to calmly approach this stage of their lives.
