The Citadelle hospital invites the public to come and discover on Thursday, May 30 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. how virtual reality can be useful to better understand multiple sclerosis.

“Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune neurological disease that affects the central nervous system. In Belgium, it is estimated that around 12,000 people live with this disease. MS generally affects young adults, with peak incidence between 20 and 40 years of age, and is more common (two to three times) in women than in men,” explains the hospital.

The symptoms are varied: vision problems, muscle weakness, numbness and tingling, asthenia, cognitive problems (difficulty concentrating, memory loss, etc.), urinary and intestinal problems, etc.

To better understand the disease, the Citadelle will offer an innovative device: using virtual reality and haptic gloves (skin sensitivity), you will be able to put yourself “in the shoes” of a patient affected by MS and do the experience of restriction of movement, loss of dexterity, tremors…

These are the consequences of the disease which can impact daily life: “The user will be immersed in a room with a table in the middle, on which there are various objects”, describes Philippe Calay, nurse at the MS Center at the Citadelle (university neurology department), “and for example he will have to move a plant from one pot to another… A trivial gesture for each of us but which can be problematic for certain patients suffering from multiple sclerosis”.
