Bloating, heaviness in the stomach, constipation… if you are prone to digestion problems, you know how much they can affect your well-being. It is obviously important to hydrate well and adopt a healthy and balanced diet, rich in fiber, bitter substances and probiotics. But yoga can also promote better digestion.

And there are several reasons for this. “It’s probably a combination of several things,” Jill Deutsch, director of the Yale Program for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders and a yoga instructor, tells Self magazine. Indeed, yoga does not only consist of performing physical exercises, but also breathing exercises (pranayama).

Certain yoga poses and breathing techniques activate blood circulation in the abdomen, which at the same time stimulates the function of the digestive organs. Stretches and muscle strengthening exercises for the organs of the abdominal region act as a massage for the intestines and activate digestive function.

But the mind also plays a role. Indeed, yoga has a positive effect on the perception of stress. The lower the level of stress hormones in the body, the more active the parasympathetic nervous system (which has a calming effect on the body) is. Relaxation, in turn, improves digestion and metabolism. Studies have further shown that yoga can help with irritable bowel syndrome. Studies
also show that yoga can have a positive effect on irritable bowel syndrome.

Yoga sessions can therefore be beneficial for better digestion. “Twisting postures, for example, can be helpful,” explains Jill Deutsch. “The gastrointestinal tract runs in a circular manner from the lower right part of the abdomen to the left part of the abdomen. So it makes sense that a twist or circular motion would help stimulate or enhance movement through the gastrointestinal tract,” explains the yoga teacher.

However, she wants to point out that you should not expect yoga to act as a miracle cure to instantly relieve a constipation problem. “Practicing yoga regularly, however, can provide relief,” she says.
