Participation in screening that does not take off

Public Health France has just published new data on organized breast cancer screening concerning participation in the program during the period 2022-2023: despite the number of invitations sent, the participation rate remains low (46.5% over the period 2022-2023). It is even down compared to the previous period (47.7% in 2021-2022)!

In 2022-2023, the highest regional participation rates are in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, Normandy and Brittany; the lowest are in Guyana, Corsica and PACA. While in most regions of mainland France the rates are stable or falling, Hauts-de-France stands out with a slight increase in participation.

2,620,500 women had an organized screening mammogram in 2023

If we look at the evolution of this participation since 2005, we see that after having increased until 2011-2012 to reach a peak at 52.3%, participation in the program continues to decrease, for all brackets. of age.

The evolution over recent years of the participation rate also remains complex due to the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic. However, despite this low participation of the women concerned, the detection rate of breast cancer is steadily increasing, which is consistent with the observed increase in the incidence of breast cancer in the general population.

6 out of 10 breast cancers diagnosed at an early stage

Today, 6 out of 10 breast cancers are diagnosed at a stage where local spread is limited. It’s good but we can do better. Being screened as part of the organized screening program makes it possible to detect a possible abnormality or cancer at an early stage and thus increase the chances of remission, while limiting treatments.

In addition, integrating the file of the French organized breast cancer screening program is a guarantee of reliability. This calls upon existing medical structures: mammograms are carried out in public and private radiology practices. The person who accepts the organized screening chooses their radiologist from the list of radiologists participating in the program. The latter undertake to train, to carry out quality control of the mammogram reading chain in their practice and to transmit the mammogram interpretation sheets to the management structure, as well as the images of the mammograms that they considered normal for second reading.
