The WHO recently expressed “tremendous concern” about the global spread of the H5N1 strain of avian flu and a first case of infection in humans. Are you concerned about the situation?

Concern is growing over a deadly disease transmissible from animals to humans, and, potentially in the event of further mutation, from humans to humans. This is avian flu. In mid-April, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced its “huge concern” faced with the speed of propagation of the H5N1 Source, which affects new species, including humans. A first case was in fact recorded in Texas (United States). The individual had been contaminated by a dairy cow. For the moment, experts assure that there is no reason to fall into psychosis because there is no evidence of possible transmission between humans.

If the international health authorities want to be reassuring, are you more or less worried about the spread of the disease? Several measures have been taken in recent days on European and French farms to, firstly, limit transmission between species and, secondly, prevent breeders or people around these farms from being contaminated.

“Vaccination worked and proved its effectiveness”

In the Gers, for example, farmers are calm because the epizootic – an epidemic which affects animals – was anticipated. Since last fall, a vast vaccination campaign has been carried out to protect duck and other poultry farms. “Vaccination worked and proved its effectiveness”declared Bernard Malabirade, president of the Gers Chamber of Agriculture, according to comments relayed by The Dispatch. “From the tests carried out on the vaccinated animals, it seems that they had the sufficient level of immunity against the disease. The situation is therefore positive”, he added. In France, it is rather serenity that takes precedence.
