According to a study conducted by Laval University and the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods (INAF), cranberry extract could help the microbiota and counter cardiometabolic diseases.

Indeed, this cranberry extract improves the intestinal microbiota and could help prevent chronic diseases. Cranberries and berries are actually associated with multiple health benefits.

The research team, led by Yves Desjardins, professor at the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, showed that the polyphenols and oligosaccharides present in cranberry extract stimulate, among other things, the bacterial genus Bifidobacterium. A stimulation which is associated with a reduction in the risk of diabetes and cardiometabolic diseases.

“Usually these bacteria are stimulated by the consumption of dietary fiber. We observed the same effect with cranberry extract, but at a dose almost 20 times lower,” underlines Jacob Lessard-Lord, postdoctoral fellow at INAF, in a press release.

Cranberry extract also stimulates bacteria Akkermansia muciniphilawhich plays an important role in the intestinal mucosa by helping to reduce inflammation and strengthen the intestinal barrier.

Once integrated into the diet, cranberry extract can modify the inflammatory pathway and improve the prognosis of a chronic disease since it will regenerate and recreate an anti-inflammatory environment. This has the effect of tightening the bonds between the cells of the intestinal barrier to strengthen it.

The experience

During the experiment, nearly forty people, recruited at the INAF, had to consume a cranberry supplement in capsule form in the morning and evening, equivalent to consuming 60 g of fresh cranberries.

A plasma, urine and stool sample was collected at the beginning of the experiment and after the four-day period. The study showed beneficial effects after just four days of use.

After the short-term success of the experiment, the research team now wants to determine the long-term effects of the extract.

“Even though cranberries had a beneficial effect on all participants, the results highlighted variability in their response. Future research will help identify microbiota signatures that respond best to the extract.”(AC)
