As part of writing her thesis, Cécile Mandement, a sixth-year student at ENVT, invites veterinarians and horse breeders to answer a few questions about rhodoccosis.

As part of the drafting of its veterinary practice thesis, Cecile Mandemanta student in A6, is interested in the rhodococcosisone of the main causes of pneumonia in foals aged 3 weeks to 6 months.

This condition, caused by the bacteria Rhodococcus equican come in different forms:

  • the acute respiratory form: results in respiratory distress and a high fever that appears quickly (a few days), without prior symptoms, and can lead to the death of the foal;
  • chronic respiratory form (“classic” form): the onset of symptoms is gradual, it manifests itself by fever, cough, abnormal respiratory noises (“snoring foal”), and sometimes by discharge from the nose and difficulty breathing;
  • subclinical respiratory form: the foal presents pulmonary lesions (abscesses), without presenting clinical signs;
  • atypical forms: rhodoccosis can affect different organs of the body, at the same time or independently of pulmonary involvement (digestive form with the presence of abdominal abscesses, synovitis, septic arthritis, uveitis, hepatitis, pericarditis, meningitis, nephritis, subcutaneous abscesses, etc.).

These questionnaires are completely anonymous and last between 10 and 20 minutes.
