Colorectal cancer, second deadliest cancer in France, increases in a disturbing manner in those under 50. According to a major study published in January 2025, we find this trend in 27 countries (France, North European countries, North America, Australia and even Belarus) out of the 50 studied. The increase would be particularly rapid in New Zealand, Chile, Puerto Rico and England. How to explain this phenomenon when among those over 50, the incidence of this cancer is stable and sometimes even in decrease?

A “generational shift” linked to the evolution of our lifestyles

According to the authors of the study, The “generational shift” is linked to the evolution of lifestyles: less physical activity, but above all degradation of the quality of food. The importance of the food factor has indeed been confirmed by two recent studies. The first, led by Australian researchers, showed that people eating more fibers (whole grains, fruits, vegetables) and unsaturated fats (vegetable oils, fatty fish) had a risk of decreased colorectal cancer.

The second, which analyzed the results of 28 studies, confirms that a diet rich in fibers but also in dairy products is protective, while red meat, alcohol and sweet products increase the risk. The fibers are the favorite food of bacteria of the intestinal flora. By promoting their balance in the microbiota, they would decrease the inflammation of the digestive tract and, thus, contradict the appearance of tumors.
