It is found in Coca-Cola « zero »in lightened Yoplait yogurts, in drinks « for athletes » Powerade or mentos chewing gum. Sugar substitute, aspartame – alias E951 – is present in more than 2,500 foods and drinks in Europe. Faced with the health risks he presents, Yuka, the Cancer League and Foodwatch launched, on Tuesday, February 4, a petition for its ban.
Since July 2023, the sweetener has indeed been classified as « carcinogen possible for humans » by the International Center for Research on Cancer (Circ). « This ranking is added to more than thirty years of studies highlighting its harmful effects on health »Recalls Foodwatch in a press release. Aspartame would thus be linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and could, contrary to what is believed, promote long -term overweight.
On this February 4, World Cancer Day, the three organizations therefore ask the European Commission and the member states of « Take concrete measures to prohibit this additive based on the precautionary principle » – which requires to withdraw from the market any product deemed potentially dangerous for public health.
For Camille Dioz, from Foodwatch France, « An additive that brings nothing apart from health risks should not be present in our diet: this is the basis of the precautionary principle ».
