A case of invasive infection in meningococcus was detected at the Léon-Huet college in La Roche-Posay, we learned by the CPTS (Territorial Professional Community of Health) of the Châtelleraudais, in a bulletin dated February 4, 2025.
The revelation of this case led to the implementation of precautions for the entire class of the adolescent concerned.
Preventive treatment for the whole class
“An invasive meningococcal infection was diagnosed in a 13-year-old child attending the Léon-Huet college in La Roche Posay, Indicates the CPTS. In the absence of a class plan, it was not possible to define with certainty the student’s class neighbors. Consequently, all the students of this class have been selected as a contact case having to benefit from prophylaxis as soon as possible. »»
In other words, all college students concerned will have to receive preventive treatment by antibiotics.
“It is indeed a meningococcal infection and not a meningitis because there is no damage to the nervous systemcomments Doctor France Dupuy, from the Regional Health Agency (ARS) Nouvelle-Aquitaine. There is no special isolation of contact cases, but instructions have been sent to parents to go to a doctor and children benefit from preventive treatment. There are no other precautions than that. »»
The ARS recalls in passing that the best prevention remains vaccination. “Vaccination against meningococcus has been extended and is recommended for children”explains the agency.
