The number of cases of chikungunya increases sharply in Reunion. From January 20 to 26, 169 new cases were reported, against 82 cases the previous week. Several homes are being extended, the authorities indicate.

The spread of the chikungunya virus is confirmed in Reunion. 529 cases have been recorded since August 23, 2024, the vast majority of which since January 2025. The number of cases increased from week to week. Especially since the heavy rains of the last days bring conditions favorable to the proliferation of mosquitoes.

From January 20 to 26, 169 new cases were reported, against 82 cases the previous week. In total, 18 municipalities are now counting cases of Chikungunya.

The fires of Bras-Creux in the stamp, the line-des-400 between the stamp and Saint-Pierre, and that of Ravine Sheunon at the Etang-Salé are the most worrying. Other households are also reported in neighborhoods such as the Butor in Saint-Leu, Le Chemin de la Gare in Saint-André, Grand-Bassin and Trois-Mares-les-Bas in the Tampon, La Rivière in Saint-Louis and La Vallée-Line-des-Bambous in Saint-Pierre.

Several active homes are being extended, some could even merge. This is particularly the case with the stamp with the homes of the line-des-400 and Sarda Garriga in the city center. At the Etang -Salé, the Foyer de la Ravine Sheunon progresses towards the canoe road, letting fear a connection, indicates the authorities.

Yesterday, Monday, February 3, Dr. Patrick Mavingui, research director at the CNRS, attached to the University of Reunion, reported the public health predictions France on the possible evolution of the epidemic. A first epidemic peak could thus be reached in May. The scenario of the 2005-2006 epidemic could then reproduce.

According to the specialist, an overall effective control strategy must be deployed, including vaccination or even anti-label control.

To avoid it and stem the propagation of the virus, the authorities announce the reinforcement of the anti -vetoral control teams. Now 150 agents are dedicated to it, including 115 who work in the field. Nearly 300 visits are currently made per day, specifies the prefecture.

Since January 2025, 4,814 houses have been visited, 1,095 larval gîtes eliminated and 2,535 treatments carried out.

As a reminder, certain gestures can be observed to combat the proliferation of mosquitoes, such as eliminating stagnant waters, protecting yourself from bites or consulting your doctor in the event of symptoms.
