Turnberry, still on top!
At the World Golf Awards 2024 which has just taken place in Madeira, the course Ailsa in Turnberry, Four-time host of the Open Championship (1977, 1986, 1994 and 2009), has been voted Scotland's best course, while the historic resort also wins the 'World's Best Golf Hotel' award.
Situated along the stunning west coast of Scotland, Ailsa has almost 120 years of history.
One of them, the par 3 of hole no. 9, is played on steep cliffs towards the imposing Turnberry lighthouse which the waves lap below. It is undoubtedly the most iconic hole with holes 4 to 11 offering magnificent views of the Firth of Clyde, Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran.
The famous architect Martin Ebert pushed Ailsa to new heights when he redesigned the entire course between 2014 and 2016.
Many other world-famous courses were in the running to be proclaimed Scotland's best, including fellow Open Championship courses Royal Troon, Muirfield, the Old Course at St Andrews and the championship course at Carnoustie Golf Links.
Furthermore, property of D. Trump, Turnberry was also named “World’s Best Golf Hotel” ahead of a list of internationally renowned finalists spanning five continents.
The new Portuguese course Dunas de Terras Comporta also rewarded
At the same World Golf Awards ceremony, Terras da Comporta won one of the three most prestigious awards: its Dunas de Terras da Comporta course confirmed its growing reputation as one of the world's must-see golf courses in winning three of the biggest international honors.
The par 71 course located near Lisbon had an unforgettable evening, notably receiving the coveted “Best Golf Course in the World”.
Additionally, the Dunas Course, the golf architect's first golf design project David McLay-Kidd in continental Europe, has also been named “Best Golf Course in Europe” and “Best Eco-Friendly Golf Course in Europe”. These distinctions come only 13 months after the official opening of the course in October 2023, which was widely praised by the international press.
Rodrigo Ulrich, director of golf at Terras da Comporta, said: “We knew the Dunas Course was going to be something special and it’s amazing to see what we’ve achieved in such a short time, with people coming from all over the world to play the course. It's rare for a golf course to have as big an impact in such a short time as The Dunas. This is the course that everyone is talking about at the moment and it already has fans all over the world. »
Located an hour south of Lisbon in a secluded setting on the edge of the Sado Estuary nature reserve, the Dunas course – which measures 6,646 meters from the back tees – was created on 84 hectares of natural terrain and sandy and was built using the most stringent environmental practices.
