The young man’s body was found

He had been actively sought since his disappearance on Thursday, August 29, after a pedal boat trip on Lake Vouglans. The body of the 28-year-old was found a week later, on Thursday, September 5, by divers from the river brigades of the gendarmeries of Dienville (Aube) and Saint-Jean-de-Losne (Côte-d’Or). The day before, the submerged sonar had returned echoes that interested investigators.

Multiple dives

“He was found early this afternoon in the search area we have been working in all week,” said the Jura gendarmerie. Since Friday, September 30, the Jura gendarmes and firefighters have meticulously searched an area of approximately 15,000 m2 located opposite the pedal boat rental hut on Bellecin beach. Multiple dives were carried out, notably with the assistance of the Jura fire brigade dog brigade. Drones were also deployed in the area to examine the surrounding banks, which are difficult to access. After the first three days of research, a sonar fixed to a boat was used, then another. This time submerged, this allowed for better quality images to be obtained.

A friendly bond in the Jura

The gendarmerie confirms that the young man, before leaving to live in Australia a few years ago, lived in the Jura with his family now settled in Brittany. Back in the area for the holidays, he had met up with his Jura friends from that time. As for the circumstances of the drowning, the investigation is still ongoing but questions remain. On Thursday, August 29, at nightfall, the gendarmes received a call from one of the members of the group of friends.

“They were worried that one of their friends was not there at the start of the evening. A patrol went to the scene 30 minutes later. It was pitch black. There were the usual checks. At that time, there was no question of a possible drowning.” According to the police, the young men were surprised that their friend had left without saying anything, even though they told the soldiers that he was in the habit of wandering around as he met them.

The next day, Friday, August 30, the police still had no news. The fear of a drowning began to mature. It was there, early in the afternoon, that they deployed the drones and boats to begin the search.
