Modern R17 to be the Star of the Paris Motor Show

More seventies, you die! Throughout the 1970s, the Renault catalog was rich with two twin sports coupes: the R15 and R17. Dizygotic twins, however, because there were some differences between the two models. Differences that we find on this reinterpretation, and which confirm that we are dealing with an R17. First, there are the four headlights (rectangular and not round), slightly yellow, like on the 1971 car. The R15, on the other hand, only had two headlights.

After the R5 and the 4L, Renault reinvents the R17 - Renault

It also had a large rear side window stretching to the C-pillar, while the R17 had two small windows, one of which was hidden by a plastic grille. Exactly like this 2024 version. Furthermore, those who have known the models will easily identify the evocation of the rear face, the general profile, and even the references of the interior, with these four separate dials placed on a very simple dashboard, the small central screen positioned as the car radio was at the time, and even the “petal” seats.

Magnificent neo-retro exercise

Technically, the car uses a 270 hp electric motor positioned at the rear, and rests on an all-carbon structure, thanks to which the weight is barely 1,400 kilos. Unfortunately, this magnificent neo-retro exercise was carried out in collaboration with the French Ora Ito, who is more of a designer like Philippe Starck than like Pininfarina.

Clearly, the automobile is not its business. And yet, what a success! Alas, Renault is very clear on the fact that this piece will remain unique, and is not intended for production. Really? In any case, it will be on the Renault stand at the Paris Motor Show, which is being held next October. We will see if the public’s reactions do not push the manufacturer to change its mind, as we have just seen with another typically seventies coupe. Soon an R17 Vs Hyundai N74 match?
